How do I evaluate whether to concentrate on a certificate program or a particular practice area?

If you wish to concentrate in a particular practice area, examine your motivation. This is not the world of fifty years ago; many attorneys change firms and practice areas multiple times before they find their niche.

Don't focus all your energies on a certain area just because you hear there will be good jobs available in that area. Focus on something that interests you and that you think you will enjoy doing.

Also, look at the expectations of someone in a given practice area and see if your background fits. Don't decide to focus on patent law if you don't have a science or engineering background. Don't focus on litigation if you are uncomfortable with public speaking. You get the idea.
